No Manna Falling From Heaven in the Capitalist World.
As the Mother of the Nation, I am prompted to write this after seeing many headlines about Musk’s “generosity.” They labelled it “breaking news” without even interviewing the source, Musk himself. Besides, how can something be breaking news if it is already on social media?
Instead of sourcing an expert to write a proper analytical opinion so that the nation stays informed and is not blinded by the illusory “Samaritan,” the media publish unresearched repeated stories.
Background of illusionary “Samaritan”
Elon Musk announced a few days ago that he is giving one SpaceX share to every American child under 18. That’s about 72 million kids. At roughly $148 per share, the total comes to around $10.7 billion, and the shares will go into Trump Accounts.
The illusion of the “generous capitalist”
On the surface it looks generous. Musk has always said AI and technology will enrich everyone so no one has to work. He has put a lot of money into energy and technology, so he holds serious influence over parts of the global economy. But $10.7 billion is still only a small fraction of his wealth. He is not giving away most of what he owns.
I follow Musk on X and respect his drive to innovate and create wealth; though not by his views on women. I share the belief that people should build wealth rather than wait for an illusionary theory of manna from heaven. That is something I have tried to practice through economic empowerment work at AbafaziPhambili.
Musk is a core capitalist. He often says free lunches are a form of “suicidal empathy” on his X. So when he gives away shares, it is not real wealth redistribution. A capitalist like him does not give something for nothing if there is no return on investment.
No Manna from Heaven
My analysis is that this is a smart move to help fund his bigger dreams, especially SpaceX and the Mars project. These shares are like “buy one, get one free”. Shares are not liquid cash that people can easily use to buy groceries, houses, etc. So he is not really giving , he is building micro-retail capital.
The shares will be held for a period so they can grow. Parents who see the value rise may reinvest earnings back into SpaceX or related companies. That way more people become stakeholders in the success of the mission. If the Mars project faces setbacks, Musk only risks a small slice of his wealth instead of carrying the full load alone. In that sense, the structure creates potential alignment of his interests and ambitions rather than a simple one-way transfer.
Brilliant on consumer psychology
Musk is extremely intelligent. He understands how people’s minds work. Many parents will want to add more money on top of that $148 share so their children can hold more than one. In this way Musk can get his money back before any real loss hits him. The people end up carrying more of the risk than he does.
Financial Literacy
On the surface it appears as financial literacy, teaching citizens about stocks and motivating them to open investment accounts. I argue that this is not true financial literacy. It does not introduce the public to the broader market. Instead, it locks them into his dreams. This is brand indoctrination and captured capital.
True financial literacy teaches diversification, understanding market risk, and how to evaluate different asset classes and portfolios. It does not lock people inside one billionaire’s radar. By distributing these shares to roughly 72 million children, he has already built an army of cheap micro-retail investors rather than creating real financial literacy.
Shifting environmental liability
I am not an environmentalist. However, I imagine how his rockets have been causing severe environmental damage. Explosions scatter debris and ash that can harm wildlife and pollute the surrounding areas.
By giving shares to millions of children, he reduces the chance of strong public backlash. Parents who now see those shares as part of their children’s future wealth may view any criticism or tighter regulation of SpaceX as an attack on their own children’s money. In this way he softens accountability.
Political engineering
It works as a political strategy. The shares sit in Trump Accounts and cannot be freely sold for years. Parents who want those accounts to keep growing have a reason to keep supporting the current leadership. We all know Trump ngumajika eduze, how quickly things can change when power shifts. Parents may therefore fear losing benefits of their children’s investments under a different political administration so they will keep voting the same way for a long time.
In short, this is not manna falling from heaven! In a market economy, big gifts like this almost always come with calculated incentives, long-term value creation, and careful risk management. There is no free lunch in capitalism.
