What specific services does your department offer to address gender-based violence (GBV)?
We conduct educational campaigns through various channels, including social media, door-to-door initiatives, and awareness programs
Can you describe the process a survivor of GBV would go through when pressing charges?
Victims will be taken to the Victim-Friendly Room (VFR) to receive counselling in a supportive environment. Here, the procedure will be carefully outlined to ensure the victims comfort and the interview will be conducted and examine the extensive injuries with due sensitivity and professionalism. Should the victim express a desire to press charges, the police officer will be assigned. However, should the victim choose not to proceed with the case, we will refer to the relevant institution
How do you ensure confidentiality and privacy for GBV survivors who come forward?
Victims are taken and interviewed at the private room namely VFR or Trauma room. All information is kept and recorded in SAPS files
What steps are taken to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent future incidents of GBV?
Arrest will be made after a victim opened a criminal case against the alleged perpetrator, suspect will be charged and brought before the court of law.
Could you kindly advise on the proper procedure to follow when police officers refuse to open a case for the GBV victims?
They must report to the senior Commander. She/he will assign a police officer to assist them. If the Senior Commander does not assist, then it must be reported to the Station Commander
Are there any fees associated with filing charges against perpetrators at the police station?
There are no fees associated with laying a case of any kind in any police station in South Africa. All services are free.
Are there any sections of the act/constitutional rights of the GBV survivors?
Domestic violence act and GBV act, ACT 14 2021 Amendment 2021
