Book Review: ‘I Never Saw Her Eyes’ by Keletso Yende

Brief summary of ‘I Never Saw Her Eyes

In ‘I Never Saw Her Eyes’, I share my personal journey through the heartbreak of losing my baby who was stillborn, the challenges I faced with fertility, and how I eventually found my sense of worth through the pain. This book is an honest reflection on coming to terms with loss, finding strength, and fulfilling the purpose God has for us, even in difficult times. It’s a resource for couples dealing with pregnancy and baby loss, as well as fertility challenges, offering insights on grief, healing, and the importance of having supportive structures around you.

What inspired you to write the book?

The inspiration behind I Never Saw Her Eyes came from a deep desire to honour the memory of my late daughter, Nombuso Bokang Bubu Yende. Her story holds great significance, and I wanted to ensure that her legacy continues to touch lives. I also felt a calling to inspire hope in others, reminding them that God remains Jehovah Rapha, who heals, even amid unimaginable pain. I wanted to create a space for those struggling with similar challenges, offering them comfort and encouragement. Additionally, I saw an opportunity to break the silence around fertility struggles, particularly within Christian circles, and normalize open, honest conversations about this often-taboo topic.

What message do you hope the readers take away from your book?

The message I hope readers take away from I Never Saw Her Eyes is that healing is possible, even in the darkest moments of loss. I want people to know that God is still Jehovah Rapha, the God who heals, and that their worth is not defined by their fertility or their struggles. Through my journey, I hope to show that there is hope, purpose, and strength to be found, even in the face of unimaginable grief. My prayer is that readers will find comfort in knowing they are not alone, that men and women grieve differently but both need support, and that loss can ultimately lead to growth, healing, and a deeper understanding of God’s purpose for their lives.
